Assessment and Intervention with the High Risk Infant in the NICU and During the Transition to Home
Event Description: Learn practical assessments and strategies to address behavioral, developmental, and feeding challenges with high-risk infants in the NICU.

Course participants will enhance their NICU clinical skills and bolster early identification of therapeutic needs and targeted interventions by learning to collaborate with the NICU team and the patient’s parent or caregiver. Discussion topics include the NICU environment, caregiving, altered sensory and motor experiences, and the transition home.

#246 Neurologic Gait Analysis and Treatment for Lesions of the Cortex, Subcortex & Cerebellum 

Event Description: Ambulation is one of the most important activities of functional mobility for the acquired brain injured patient. Therapists engage in early ambulation activities because of the changes in healthcare delivery leading to a new focus in rehabilitation: functional mobility at the highest possible level prior to discharge. Inadequate motor return forces early compensation patterns to reach functional outcomes within a shorter length of stay as well as less treatment time per session. Since the focus is on function, physical therapy practitioners need to be adept in gait analysis and treatment utilizing a total body approach to accomplish daily living skills. This course will review typical stroke lesions of the cortex, subcortex and cerebellum and describe resulting impairments that may be observed during gait. The focus is on increased understanding and application of therapeutic interventions to improve observed abnormal neurologic gait patterns from site specific lesions. Using a systems approach, occupational and physical therapy practitioners will be instructed how to formulate interventions within their scope of practice and establish and or follow a plan of care to improve gait impairments. Specific treatment interventions that can be used across the continuum from acute care to home health to alleviate abnormal gait patterns will be discussed and demonstrated via media, instructor-participant interaction, and physical therapy practitioner interaction for practical application. The course will utilize a case-based approach to demonstrate and summarize application of material. (Pre-course Recommendations: Participants should review normal gait analysis)

#130 Orthopedic Rehabilitation for the Lower Extremity...

Treatment for common injuries or impairments to Lumbopelvic, hip, knee, foot and ankle

Event Description: While there are many approaches to common orthopedic concerns, this course will focus on proven techniques for restoring function to the Lumbopelvic, hip, knee, foot and ankle after injury or impairment. Lumbar pelvic control and power in the hips and lower legs are essential for improvement in function and the reduction of injuries. The course will review the anatomy and mechanics of the Lumbopelvic, hip, knee and foot and ankle that pertain to balance, stability, and power. An over view of balance systems evaluation and perturbation training with emphasis. Several different types of lower extremity dysfunctions, including hip labial tears, ACL rehab, Patella and Achilles tendinopathy, shin splints, soleus syndrome, cuboid syndrome, and abnormal foot mechanics will be presented with rehabilitation programs. Foot orthotic intervention and prescription will be discussed. Neuromuscular training and eccentric strengthening will be demonstrated in lab and developed into rehab concepts. Evidence based evaluation tools will be developed into and extensive assessment of muscle imbalance within the Lumbopelvic, hip, knee and foot and ankle. Implementation of rehabilitation programs individualized according to evaluative findings will be reviewed/discussed and demonstrated in case studies, utilizing the research based findings discovered through the course. Learners will leave with knowledge to implement treatment for these common orthopedic injuries for best results with their patients.

 #133 Blood Flow Restriction Training 

Event Description: Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) training has been shown to result in hypertrophy, strength gains, and functional improvements while utilizing low-load high repetitions to encourage safety, minimize over-training, and minimize inflammation of affected areas. This occurs by allowing arterial flow to the desired muscle while restricting venous return, selectively manipulating the physiology of the muscle during the training session. This is extremely beneficial for patients who are in their peak training cycle, injured, or recovering from surgery. It is also beneficial for older adults who are attempting to improve strength, endurance, and independence while minimizing the risk associated with high-load interventions. (Introductory level)

#213 Visual Rehabilitation & Neuro Handling After a Neurological Incident...Concepts for Function 

Event Description: This two-day course will discuss the concepts of the physical care and evidence based principals to create results in clinical interventions for stroke, hemiplegia, brain injury, spasticity and general motor control issues. The course will focus on perception and oculomotor deficit remediation and compensation after a neurological event. Hemiparesis handling made easy with a focus on the core in lab work. Lecture information will cover spasticity, UE/LE treatment, and pusher strategies. Lab work will cover facilitations, stretching, a technology lab for neuro rehabilitation function analysis, and midline shift dysfunction (pusher). Functional applications of improvement and carryover of care will be addressed as well as documentation to advocate for a client. The Vision Rehabilitation lab portions will cover ocular motor, visual field, and neglect testing. Functional treatment interventions will be discussed for each of the impairments. Occupational and physical therapists and assistants will find this course to be heavily lab based to provide attendees with skills for immediately use for effective strategies in the clinic. Documentation and advocacy for the client with consideration to the payor is also discussed.
